Sticks, stones

Artist's Statement
Lethe, the river of forgetfulness in Greek mythology, separated Tartarus (a place for the wicked) from the Elysian Fields (a place for the good). This project uses fallen branches from the surrounding woodlands to create a river of sticks, a tributary of the river Lethe.

I often create indoor installations that explore themes of myth, death, dying, rebirth, loss and longing. My outdoor projects are celebrations of natural materials gathered and arranged in spirals and vortices. Forest Hills Cemetery is a natural place to combine these two approaches to my work.

The river of sticks (Styx) comes out from the top of the hill and flows down to a swirling spiral; it is in some way a representation of the journey that we all will take.
