Hand-wrapped wire and cotton fibers, plaster, clay, pigment
Gray Birch

Most of my work is about process and materials; while I have a concept, intuition and experimentation play a major role. Here, I have wrapped many layers of wire to create large organic forms which slither, creep, wrap around, and dangle from the tree limbs. Although constructed of man-made materials, the piece appears to be alive. Seedlings or pods rest on the ground below. They are not planted, yet they still sprout life.

In my work, wrapping- a rhythmic process without climax- always represents the element of time. Wrapping can require little thought- just repetition of the same movements; time passes, forms build and the armature is buried beneath layers of material.

For me, this piece is about growth and renewal, connections to the past, where we come form and where we are going. I hope it will trigger a memory or a feeling. Then it becomes about the viewer's own history, life, and experiences.
