Bark Balls
2002
Bronze
European Weeping Beech

I have created three bronze bark balls, sylvan beings, that appear to be engaged in conversation, or to be keening. They resemble the protrusions and gnarls on aged trees; perhaps they are the souls of trees, at home in the forest, momentarily resting in the sun and air outside the tree's trunk.

Created from casts of actual bark, these pieces express my interest in subtle patterns in nature, patterns which are often the language of life and growth. Captured in bronze, fleeting or overlooked textures and forms are revealed so that we pause and see them in memorable ways. We might start to notice similar patterns elsewhere in nature, such as the complex lines of our own fingerprints, or the shapes carved in the sand by a retreating tide, or the marks left by frost. I find beauty in these traces of time and nature.
