Hemlock Grove

I have cast a trail of footprints that are seamlessly buried in the earth. They create a path alongside a set of stone stairs leading into the woods. The prints gradually become deeper as they descend toward a tree, ultimately merging with its roots. I wish to create the illusion of a person embarking on their final journey, a journey that ultimately ends in their union with nature. The body of the person, however, is absent, representing the ephemeral nature of the flesh in contrast to the eternal quality of the spirit.

I specifically chose to locate the footprints in the woods bordering the cemetery. This "wild" area is allowed to follow the cycles of nature; the plants and trees grow and decay freely, in contrast to the carefully cultivated grounds. It is a reminder of agelessness, of growth and rebirth amidst the controlled grid of manicured lawns and headstones.
